Why Setting Goals is Like Playing Poker

I'm in the middle of watching the 2010 World Series of Poker Main Event on ESPN. Like several other shows, it's starting to get backed up on my DVR like dirty dishes in the sink. I really do wish I had enough time in my day to loaf around and watch a bunch of middle-aged white men play cards, but I do have a living to make.

A Little About Me

Who is this guy?

Well, by day I'm a freelance writer, specializing in health and wellness. That's right, I write about this stuff for a living.

By night I'm a husband and a dad to two of the most amazing kids on the planet.

Why did I start this blog? It wasn't but a few months ago that I realized my own life was out of balance. I was in a job I hated, I was fat and lazy, and I wanted to do something about it.

Launch

Every day should be a well day.

Every day should be a day where you feel like your life's well-balanced. Where everything's in harmony.

But how often does that really happen? If you're like most people, you spend most days feeling out of balance, off-kilter and just plain blah...

Well, here's where that all changes.

Here, we're going to talk about the four pillars of wellness that you can focus on to help you achieve balance in your life. They are:

  • Physical wellness - You and your body. Need to lose weight? Quit smoking? Get in shape? If you do, then you're out of balance.
  • Financial wellness - Worrying about how to pay the bills or save for retirement causes stress and even relationship issues. But you don't have to be rich to achieve financial wellness.
  • Emotional wellness - This one deals with how you handle stress, success, love and loss. Staying emotionally centered is always a tough challenge.
  • Spiritual wellness - You don't have to be religious to be spiritual. Feeling like you're part of something bigger can help you achieve amazing things and also keep you grounded.

That's what this blog is about. It's not about trying to be perfect or having the perfect life. You don't need to reach for such lofty aspirations. It's about living life to its fullest based on where you're at NOW. Not tomorrow or yesterday. What you're doing today.

So stay tuned.

And have a well day.
